Since the pandemic, many of us have become guilty of hoarding a little extra clutter in our homes. Now, we’ve become time-poor with the return to work and social lives. Days fly by, and when we get a moment to relax on weekends, cleaning just feels too overwhelming. But a tidy home fosters a tidy mind and frees up your time so that you can enjoy your space and have more fun.

We know it’s hard, particularly when you live in a small space. That’s why we bring you five simple and easy organizing hacks for your apartment.

Declutter your entire home

Like Marie Kondo says, "The best way to find out what we really need is to get rid of what we don't."

Let's start with the most-visited rooms such as bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchens. These rooms tend to build up clutter quickly. Start small and look inside your draws, closets and kitchen cabinets. Remove what you don’t need and what’s garbage (yes, that stash of junk in your kitchen drawer) to start freeing up storage space. Now that you have a couple extra drawers or closet space, you can start finding homes for items that you may not have had before.

Compartmentalize

Compartmentalize everything! Group similar items into categories so you can find exactly what you need when you need it and make sure they are in the right place. Put them in smaller boxes or bags, so they stay together. This will make it easier to find them later and keep your drawers and shelves neat.

Buy the right tools

Invest in affordable organizers, hangers, and hooks that look chic but are also useful. Use containers and boxes so you can keep multiple items in the same cabinet or drawer neatly. A handy trick is to place a non-slip mat under the boxes to keep them from shifting when opening and closing the drawers.

If you're short on space, consider how you can add storage. No more closet space? Add some rental-friendly hooks by your front door or even the back of your bedroom door to hang coats and bags.

Labelling & stacking:

Use clear containers to quickly find what you're looking for. If you want to go the extra mile, visit your local container store or check out Amazon to find matching containers and custom labels. Don’t be afraid to have a little fun with the organization process.

If you're not wanting to spend any money, repurpose what you have, such as old shoe boxes and food storage containers. Remember, this isn't just a hack for your kitchen but can be great for your bathroom, bedroom and closet.

Use your corners:

We all face a constant battle against clutter, and without even realizing it, many of us have a corner of shame where items just tend to pile up. Maybe it's a chair in your bedroom that holds coats or a corner of your kitchen bench. If this resonates with you, think of a solution to keep this space tidier. Perhaps it's a basket that you fill with odds and ends until it's full, or maybe you purchase a coat rack to hold your 'in-between' clothes, purses, and scarfs, so they don’t end up sitting on a chair for two weeks.

When it comes to organization, it's most important to create solutions and habits that you can stick to. Don't get over-ambitious and attempt to develop complicated organizational systems that you know you won't be able to stick with.

Perhaps you're finding that your space is just a little too small, despite your best efforts to organize. Maybe it's time for a bigger apartment. Reach out to a member of our team. Check out our available units in these areas at www.parkproperty.ca.
