Toronto can sometimes steal the spotlight when thinking of the best places to live in Ontario. There’s an ever-growing subway system, the world-renowned CN tower, fantastic nightlife, museums, festivals, restaurants, schools, and distinct neighborhoods full of their own rich histories.

But Toronto isn’t the only city boasting so many unique features in the province. Nestled outside the Greater Toronto Area and full of many amazing amenities is Kitchener - and here are some of the fantastic reasons you should get to know it!

1) The History

Formerly known as “Berlin”, the city of Kitchener was originally home to many German settlers throughout the early 18th century and onwards. In fact, it still holds this history close to its heart through a variety of traditions and events, including the annual Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest! Doon Heritage Village also embraces the region’s history by transporting you back to 1914 as a “60-acre living history” village full of entertaining activities for families and all ages alike.

2) The Beautiful Parks

The Kitchener-Waterloo region is home to many parks, including the Huron Natural Area (home to many trails and Indigenous placemaking), McLennan Park (which features ice skating and a dog park), and the Rockway Gardens. What many people may not know, however, is that it is also home to Victoria Park, which was designed by the same people who designed Central Park in New York City! So, no matter how you’re looking to immerse yourself in nature, rest assured that Kitchener has a fantastic variety of options to satisfy your needs through every season.

3) The Art

Kitchener is host to some fantastic exhibitions and galleries that are an absolute must see. The nationally acclaimed Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery (or, KWAG) was established in 1956 and has since connected many people through its art. With 3 exhibitions featured currently, and more to come, it is a fantastic Kitchener staple worth checking out. THEMUSEUM is another hot-spot for all things art, and regularly spotlights incredibly immersive exhibitions and events for all ages, including “Bites @ THEMUSEUM”, where you can enjoy a variety of creative (and delicious) meals from local vendors, and even Tricon 2023, which will feature, “all things pop culture, sci-fi, comics, anime, visual art, S.T.E.A.M., digital technology, interactive tech-art, and more!”.

4) The Food

No stranger to delicious food, Kitchener has a plethora of amazing dining options. Highlighted in lists upon lists, restaurants like 271 West, J & B Family Restaurant, and PUBLIC Kitchen & Bar have stood out as not only some of the best places to eat within Kitchener, but within the region itself. So, whether you’re looking for a delicious meal solo, for a special event, or to satisfy your inner foodie, know that Kitchener is more than well equipped to serve up some fantastic plates.

With that, we’re certain you can see why Kitchener has continuously made a name for itself throughout the years. Whether it’s the rich history, beautiful parks, arts & culture, or the food, put Kitchener next on your bucket list and see all that it has to offer!
