At Park Property Management, we take fire safety seriously.

All of our apartment buildings are equipped with a fire alarm and sprinkler system and fire safety plan. As a resident, it's important to take the time to learn how to safely exit your building in the event of a fire. If you are unaware of our fire plan, please speak with our staff, we will be happy to explain the fire exit route to you.

Fire extinguishers are an important part of resident safety and fire prevention. Do you know how to use one?

There are three types of extinguishers:

  • Class A extinguishers are used for ordinary combustibles (the kind you should have in your apartment)
  • Class B extinguishers are used for gasoline, oils, solvents, flammable gasses, and paints
  • Class C extinguishers are used for live electrical fires (ie. a stove, computer plugged into an electrical outlet, or overheated wiring)

A quick way to remember how to use a fire extinguisher is with the word PASS:

Pull the Pin. This releases the lock and allows you to discharge the extinguisher.

Aim at the base of the fire. When putting out a fire, aim for the base not the flames.

Squeeze the lever slowly. With controlled pressure, squeeze the lever to release the agent evenly at the base of the flames.

Sweep from side to side. Hold the extinguisher and move it side to side in a sweeping motion until the fire is extinguished.

Residents can increase safety measures in their own apartment by doing the following:

  • Don't leave the kitchen while cooking.
  • Never disable the fire alarm in your unit.
  • Keep flammable materials at a safe distance from heat sources.
  • Blow out candles before leaving a room.
  • Don't overload electrical outlets.
  • Keep clutter away from doorways, heat sources, and electrical outlets.
  • Keep children and pets away from electrical outlets and loose cords.

Do you have a fire extinguisher in your apartment?

You can purchase a home fire extinguisher at any hardware store, like Canadian Tire, Home Depot, or Home Hardware. A kitchen or compact fire extinguisher is perfect for apartment dwellers, as it's small, can fit under your kitchen sink and affordable at approximately $30.00 each. A small price to pay for your safety!

Our professional team at Park Property Management Inc. will regularly inspect your fire alarm and carbon monoxide detectors; however, if you hear beeping or notice an abnormality with any of your alarms, please contact us directly.
